UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller That Blends Survival Horror with Among Us Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique game where a girl harboring several personalities inside her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Within her reside four separate souls, each with their own fears and motivations. These souls can take over at will, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.
Based on revealed footage, much of the action unfolds within a eerie hospital, while additional clips show the protagonist exploring a desolate chapel.
A World of Individual Horror
"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to others can activate a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The central mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at any given moment. However, these souls will change involuntarily as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become amplified and attack the protagonist in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the lobby have enormous blooms growing from their necks are. Flowers are an ever-present element, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."
After a player have deduced a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The last one standing might be a fraud. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
