Russian President Vladimir Putin Vows Continuous Crude Oil Shipments to India in Rebuff of Washington Pressure

In a unambiguous statement to the West, President Vladimir Putin stated to PM Narendra Modi that Russia is prepared to maintain “unbroken” deliveries of oil to India. These remarks came as the two leaders met in the Indian capital and affirmed their partnership were “immune to foreign coercion.”

A Signal For the West

This affirmation, delivered Friday, seemed to be a pointed rebuke at the United States and its allies, which have repeatedly attempted to pressure New Delhi into reducing its historical links with Moscow. The context is in response to earlier Washington's moves, such as additional import duties on India because of its acquisition of discounted Russian crude.

“Moscow remains a trustworthy source of energy resources and anything necessary for the growth of India’s economy,” he remarked. “Russia is prepared to keep securing the steady flow of energy for the booming Indian economy.”

The Indian leader, while not mentioning oil directly, reinforced the sentiment by stating that “energy security has been a robust and crucial foundation of the India-Russia alliance.”

Questioning Washington's Stance

In the lead-up to the talks, via a TV appearance, Putin had questioned Washington's stance over India's dealings with Russia. He argued, “Should America is entitled to buy our nuclear fuel, then why can't India claim the same privilege?”

Putin's arrival marked his maiden journey to India following the beginning of the war in Ukraine, and both sides made a visible attempt to demonstrate that the personal rapport between the heads of state was undisturbed.

A Personal Greeting

Taking an unusual gesture, the Indian PM welcomed directly Putin as he disembarked. They exchanged a hearty embrace like close allies before holding a private dinner on Thursday evening.

He in his statement called India's relationship with Russia as “a guiding star” and said it was “founded on shared respect and profound confidence.”

Reaffirming Strategic Partnerships

Friday's talks produced multiple significant pacts across military and financial collaboration. A major outcome was the finalization of an economic cooperation programme extending until 2030, which targets to double bilateral trade to a hundred billion USD each year by the 2030 deadline.

The leaders also agreed to recalibrate their military partnership. Although Russia remains India's primary exporter of defence equipment, the volume has reduced in recent years as India aims to broaden its supply base.

Their communique emphasized cooperation in the collaborative manufacturing of cutting-edge defence platforms, although direct mention of purchases such as the Sukhoi Su-57 were not made.

Ultimately, Russia and India restated that amid the “ongoing challenging, strained, and unpredictable international environment, the Indo-Russian partnership remain resilient to external pressure.”
