A prolonged deep freeze has enveloped a severe and lengthy Arctic outbreak, with temperatures hovering between -20C and -40C for an extended duration. This week, the Yukon community of Braeburn saw the mercury drop to -55.7C, its coldest December temperature since 1975.
Enduring Chill Below -40C
Meanwhile, Mayo and Dawson endured 16 consecutive nights below -40C, with the temperature in Mayo bottoming out at -50.4 degrees Celsius earlier this week. Whitehorse similarly reported 10 nights when temperatures dropped below -30C.
This Arctic air mass pushed further southward over the festive period. Christmas night saw Edmonton's temperatures plummet below minus 28C.
December 26th was anticipated to usher in readings no higher than -20 Celsius through a wide swath, from Edmonton in the west to Quebec in the east.
Expected to Continue For Days to Come
The severe cold is forecast to persist into the new year. There are warnings of possible electrical grid strain in Yukon territory soon, as its energy infrastructure faces unprecedented demand from historically high electricity consumption.
This extended freeze is the result of the polar vortex remaining anchored across the northern part of the continent this month, enabling a surge of icy Arctic winds to descend. The frigid dome is projected to gradually withdraw north gradually, enabling milder Pacific air to move across the United States and penetrate southern Canadian regions.
Dramatic Difference with US Warmth
Meanwhile, in a dramatic contrast, areas of the United States saw the hottest December 25th in their history as readings skyrocketed 15 to 30 degrees Celsius above normal. Across wide regions, the atmosphere was more akin to late spring rather than the end of December.
A number of states broke historical records for December 25th warmth. In Oklahoma, Oklahoma City hit 25C on Tuesday, exceeding the old record of 22C from 1982. Cities including Austin and Dallas, in Texas, and Charlotte, North Carolina similarly saw thermometers rise past the 25C mark.
Atmospheric Ridge Drives the Heat
Unseasonable heat is predicted to persist for the remainder of the week and beyond, with abnormal warmth projected to move across the southeastern US in the coming days.
The unseasonable temperatures are powered by a strong upper-level ridge extending from the desert south-west towards the north and east, establishing a classic heat-dome pattern. This setup creates an extensive zone of high atmospheric pressure across much of the continent, trapping warm air near the surface. Descending air compresses and adiabatically warms, allowing unusually warm temperatures to build.
