New Year Celebrants Advised to Dress Warmly with Wintry Weather Forecast Throughout the UK
Meteorologists are reporting a frosty commencement to the new year, with snowfall expected over large parts of the UK. Revelers are being urged to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.
Festive Events Go Ahead Amid Forecasts
The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay celebrations are expected to take place, unlike last year's cancellation. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be necessary," noted the national forecaster.
Celebrations Under Open but Cold Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks displays, with dry conditions and open skies. Temperatures are forecast to be cold, meaning warm wraps essential, according to forecasters.
Further north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not expected to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Extensive Snow Warnings for New Year's Day
As we enter Friday, advisories have been issued for Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

- People have been urged to leave additional time for journeys on the road.
- Disruptions and cancellations are likely on trains and buses.
Temperatures Forecast to Plummet Even More
Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to batter the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Medical Advisories Activated
At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities explained this signified the weather was expected to lead to major effects across health and social care services. This encompasses a likely increase in the number of deaths among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.
The message for all is clear: to welcome the new year in safely, dressing for the cold is completely paramount.
