New Antimicrobials Recognized as a 'Major Shift' in Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Gonorrhoea

The first new treatments for gonorrhoea in many years are being viewed as a "huge turning point" in the effort against superbug strains of the infection, according to researchers.

A Global Public Health Issue

Gonorrhoea infections are increasing around the world, with figures suggesting more than 82 million new cases each year. Especially elevated rates are reported in the African continent and countries within the WHO's designated area, which encompasses Mongolia and China to New Zealand. In England, cases have reached a historical peak, while figures across Europe in 2023 were triple the level compared to those in 2014.

“The clearance of novel therapies for gonorrhoea is an critical and opportune advancement in the reality of increasing worldwide cases, increasing antimicrobial resistance and the extremely scarce treatment choices presently on offer.”

Public health authorities are particularly alarmed about the rise in drug-resistant strains. The global health body has listed it as a "critical concern". A tracking program found that resistance to standard treatments like cefixime and ceftriaxone jumped significantly between 2022 and 2024.

Two New Therapies Receive Authorization

One new antibiotic, marketed under the name Nuzolvence, was approved by the US FDA in December for use against gonorrhoea. This infection can lead to significant complications, including the inability to conceive. Scientists hope that targeted use of this new drug will help hinder the emergence of superbugs.

Gepotidacin, created by the drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline, was also approved in close succession. This treatment, which is additionally indicated for urinary tract infections, was shown in trials to be able to combat drug-resistant strains of the gonorrhoea bacteria.

A Unique Development Model

This new treatment was the result of a new, not-for-profit approach for drug creation. The non-profit organisation GARDP partnered with the pharmaceutical company its industry partner to see it through.

“This milestone marks a major breakthrough in the therapy of superbug gonorrhoea, which up to this point has been evolving faster than medical innovation.”

Clinical Trial Data and Worldwide Availability

Based on findings published in a prominent scientific publication, the new drug eradicated over nine in ten of cases of the STI. This establishes an equal footing with the typical regimen, which combines two antibiotics. The trial involved hundreds of participants from various regions including the United States, Thailand, South Africa, and European nations.

Under the terms of its development partnership, GARDP has the ability to license and sell the drug in a wide range of low-income and middle-income countries.

Doctors treating patients have voiced hope. The availability of a one-pill regimen such as this is seen as a "critical tool" for managing the epidemic. This is considered essential to reduce the burden of the illness for individuals and to stop the proliferation of untreatable gonorrhoea around the world.
