Israeli citizens observe two-year anniversary of October 7th attacks as Gaza ceasefire negotiations continue
Citizens have gathered across the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-conducted attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions proceeded in Egypt over a resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The incident saw more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken away to Gaza as hostages. It was the most most fatal day for Jews since the Holocaust.
Israel reacted by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are considered trustworthy by the UN and other international bodies.
"The bloodthirsty opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "realize all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will no longer present a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The government authorities postponed official commemorations until 16 October - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still took place across the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of people who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Organized by the families themselves, it was televised throughout Israeli TV networks.
A period earlier, a moment of silence was respected throughout the country.
Peace Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, both sides' delegations met in the North African tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to examine the provisions of the proposal.
A senior Palestinian official familiar with the discussions revealed that an night meeting of negotiations began at evening in Egypt.
The representative explained the earlier meeting finished without tangible results, because of disagreements over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not resume fighting after the opening period of the agreement.
He added that the negotiations are "tough and have still not deliver any major advancement," but mentioned that intermediaries are striving to narrow the differences between the conflicting groups.
Key Points in Negotiations
- An enduring truce
- The trade of the captives still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The removal of troops from Gaza
- Plans for assistance provision
- Post-war governance of the territory
Civilian Reaction
In the city's Hostages Square that day, young a woman - whose brother survived the assault on the gathering, where hundreds were murdered and dozens more were abducted by Hamas fighters - shared: "No place feels like home now and until each abducted person return none of us will be secure."
"When we see all home returned, we can breathe again. Then we can commence rebuild," she added.
Near the prime minister's home in Jerusalem, people congregated to express their backing for the relatives of the abducted. Israel says 48 stay in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be surviving.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev stated: "We need do every compromise needed for the hostages to return. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be protected."
Research now frequently demonstrate that about 70% of Israelis desire the hostilities to end in as payment for the freedom of the hostages.
Palestinian Conditions
At the site of the music event, grieving people assembled to pay their respects.
From there, the noise of aerial bombardments and explosions could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people said the heavy Israeli shelling persisted.
In the main city, bombardments were reported in the morning of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and locality districts and in the eastern neighbourhood of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.
"When the night comes, the fear appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing last year, explained.
"We are afraid of the attacks. All the night we are lying together, holding each other, particularly my little child who places his head on me throughout the night."
"Continuously we check the updates to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the fighting will return to us."
Health Emergency
The healthcare center in Gaza City reported it had accepted the corpses of half dozen people by the midday, including three who died in an Israeli attack in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Another medical facility in the southern city of the city reported two more fatalities had been brought there. One of them was killed by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get help to the south region, health workers said.
