Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting
A minimum of 16 individuals perished and more than 40 were wounded when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were taken to medical facilities.
Those who died have not yet been officially identified, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the individuals who have been identified at this time.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Described as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, stating they were standing when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was also killed in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who responded to the attack.
A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
