Gavin Newsom States He Is Considering a Presidential Campaign for 2028

Gavin Newsom, a well-known Democratic figure, has disclosed that he will make a decision about whether to seek the White House in 2028 following the 2026 midterm elections wrap up.

"Yes, it would be dishonest if I denied it," Newsom commented when asked about seriously considering a presidential run after the 2026 elections. "I'd just be lying. And I'm not."

Newsom's tenure as California's leader concludes in the start of 2027, and term limits prevent another run. However, he cautioned that any choice is a long way off.

"The future will decide," he remarked.

Rising Profile as a Trump Critic

Newsom has emerged as a prominent opponent of the current federal leadership, employing his online platforms and championing a proposition that would boost Democratic congressional seats in following Republican redistricting efforts. This strategy has invited attacks from adversaries.

Controversy Over Funds

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom shows no concern about Californians in a recent segment on a major news network. Duffy revealed a strategy to withhold taxpayer dollars from the state and suggested suspending the power to issue CDLs.

"I intend to cut a significant sum from California," Duffy declared, in the wake of a recent tragic collision in the state involving an unauthorized commercial driver that resulted in fatalities and four injuries.

His administration highlighted that the U.S. government had renewed the driver's employment multiple times, which permitted him to secure a CDL under federal law.

The transportation secretary had before stated he was withholding additional funds from California for failing to implement English language requirements for truck drivers.

Pointed Reply from the Administration

"Former D-list reality star, now cabinet member, continues to misunderstand national statutes," Newsom's office retorted in a previous release responding to Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, unlike this clown, we rely on data: California commercial driver's license holders had a accident mortality rate nearly 40% lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the single state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Statistics are clear. This administration is dishonest."

Public Opinion and Future Prospects

A recent survey found that 72% of Democrats and a significant portion of the electorate said that the governor ought to campaign for the White House in 2028. Since Trump took office, his approval ratings has grown to an average of 33.5% from previous levels, while his unfavorability has fallen from an typical level of more than 40% to 38.4%.

Earlier this year, Newsom remarked while visiting several battleground states that he had "no clue" about his future for the next presidential election.

He also referenced his personal struggles, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the young age of five.

"The thought that a person who scored 960 on the SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, remarkable," he commented. "Who the hell knows? I am eager to see who emerges in 2028 and who answers the call. And that remains the key point for the U.S. citizens."
