Democrats Criticize Trump After He States They Should Face Death Penalty

Democratic officials demonstrated outrage after the ex-president alleged a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be detained and sentenced "by death" following their publication of a disputed video.

The Content That Provoked the Debate

The recorded message, published on earlier this week, includes six Democratic lawmakers who previously worked in military or intelligence roles.

"Similar to us, you all swore an oath to protect and defend this national charter," the lawmakers declared in the brief video. "At present, the dangers to our governing document are not only from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can refuse improper directives, you can decline improper directives, you should decline illegal orders. No one has to follow directives that contravene the law or our constitution."

Donald Trump's Angry Response

The recorded statement reportedly prompt a heated response from the ex-president.

On the following morning, Trump wrote on his social media platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In a separate post, he wrote: "This constitutes really serious, and Risky to our United States. Their words cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent publication, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Leaders React

Following Trump's comments on Thursday, Democratic leadership released a combined statement condemning the comments.

"Violent politics has no place in America," they wrote. "Elected officials who participated in the video all acted our nation with tremendous patriotism and distinction. We strongly censure Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous calls for execution against elected officials, and call on Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."

The party representatives also mentioned that they had been in touch with security officials "to ensure the protection of these members and their families."

"Donald Trump must right away delete these extreme digital publications and recant his violent rhetoric before he causes harm," the statement added.

Officials' Strong Answer

The lawmakers who appeared in the video also issued a statement.

"We are veterans and security experts who care for this United States and made an vow to protect and support the founding document of the United States," they said. "Our pledge continues forever, and we aim to keep it. No warning, coercion, or call for violence will deter us from that sacred duty."

"What's most telling is that the ex-president deems it liable to punishment by execution for us to restate the statutes," they stated. "Our service members should know that we have their backs as they execute their vow to the national charter and duty to adhere to only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."

They continued: "The entire nation must come together and condemn the former president's requests for our death and partisan aggression. This is a moment for ethical certainty."

Further Governmental Responses

The Senate Democratic leader also condemned Trump's statements and published on digital platforms: "We must be absolutely clear: the President of the United States is calling for the capital punishment of public representatives."

He stated: "This represents an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, all citizens – regardless of party – should denounce this immediately and absolutely."

The GOP leader defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "This constitutes very risky, you have prominent officials of the legislature telling soldiers to defy commands, I think that represents historic in the nation's past."

The Conservative representative also reportedly told media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the violation of rebellion" but that "lawyers have to analyze the wording and establish all that."

Administration Statement

During a executive branch meeting on that day, when questioned by a journalist, "Does the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson replied: "Certainly not."

"Let's be clear about what the former president is responding to," the spokesperson declared. "There are active officials of the US Congress who coordinated to orchestrate a video message to members of the American armed forces, to current military personnel advising them to disobey the president's legal commands."

She stated: "The purity of our defense system depends on the hierarchy, and if that chain of command is broken, it can lead to fatalities, it can lead to chaos, and precisely what these members of Congress ... are fundamentally encouraging."
