Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.

He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, including the light-hued ensembles that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."

His passing follows just weeks after he debuted his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "dress" once worn by the late Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in shaping form-fitting garments established him as a "genuine original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

During the nineties, he started creating ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including a number of outfits for her American tour following her marriage.

After a career spanning half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Dramatic Impact: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The fashion world says farewell to a authentic original whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
